Grow Shade: The Trees Columbus Parks Project

Theo McGee Park

In partnership with CCG Parks and Recreation and other CCG agencies, Trees Columbus is spearheading a restoration plan at Theo McGee Park with the intention to advance tree canopy management and our mission to plant, preserve, and protect the Columbus tree canopy.

Trees Columbus used a community-based approach to the planning philosophy of the Theo McGee Park Project. Understanding that healthy urban trees are interdependent with human activity, we will take a unified approach to canopy preservation and park development to ensure the sustainability of the park’s natural and human systems for generations to come.

With success and support, we can branch out and grow shade in ALL of your Columbus parks!

We want people to enjoy trees and spend time under a healthy tree canopy. Connecting people with nature and green spaces makes our community stronger, healthier, safer, and happier. And we also create advocates who will continue a legacy of making Columbus greener for future generations. In 2021, generous private donations funded community-based plans for two local parks. One at Lakebottom Park and one at Theo McGee park.

But first, we have work to do. The complete Theo McGee Park Restoration Project is a two-part process. The first part is the survey that includes a 1) Public Survey, 2) Conceptual Design, and 3) Trees Protection Plan. The second part is the implementation of these park plans. Both parts are intended to be public/private partnerships.

How You Can Help

The total project is estimated at 2.5 million. Trees Columbus has garnered the majority of funding for this project from SPLOST and federal funding. To raise the total amount, we will invest in a $75,000 crowdfunding campaign approach to further promote the community-driven planning philosophy. The goal of the fundraising campaign is to raise $75,000. Our goal is for corporate and private donors to raise $40,000. We want any plans to be driven by our neighbors who value the park as much as we do, so we will invite the community to help raise the remainder of the goal. The campaign launches in August 2022!

Will you join us in enhancing and improving Theo McGee Park?
